New York State Counties mark National County Government Week by highlighting the essential programs they provide

Counties across the country will celebrate National County Government Week next week from April 22-28. The National Association of Counties has declared energy efficiency and environmental protection as the focus of this year’s County Government Week.

“National County Government Week is an ideal opportunity for our member counties to highlight the innovative programs we provide to contribute to the quality of life in communities across the state,” said NYSAC President Lucille M. McKnight, an Albany County legislator. “Environmental protection and energy efficiency are just two public policy areas in which county governments operate.”

Other critical public policy areas, according to McKnight, include:

  • providing essential services to senior citizens, youth, veterans and persons with disabilities
  • keeping our communities safe through road patrols, E-911 emergency dispatch operations, and locking up dangerous criminals,
  • coordinating elections, ensuring democracy by conducting fair and honest elections,
  • providing emergency assistance in times of a man-made or natural disaster,
  • promoting tourism and attracting businesses and good paying jobs so people can live, work and raise a family in New York State, and
  • preventing child abuse and placing our children in a safe, caring environment

“New York’s 62 counties provide the quality of life services that make our state a great place to live and raise a family,” said Stephen J. Acquario, executive director of the New York State Association of Counties. “County Government Week is a time for counties to showcase what is often invisible to the general public.”

He encouraged county officials and the public to visit NYSAC’s web site at www.nysac.org, where there is a list of all New York State’s counties, their histories and facts of interest.

The New York State Association of Counties is a bipartisan municipal association serving all 62 counties of New York State including the City of New York. Organized in 1925, NYSAC’s mission is to represent, educate and advocate for Member Counties and the thousands of elected and appointed county officials who serve the public.
