Commissioner, Department for Aging

Albany County is seeking a dedicated, skilled and accomplished professional for the position of Commissioner of the Department for Aging.

The Department assists County residents aged sixty and above in maintaining an independent and self-directed lifestyle by providing the highest quality of supportive services to seniors, their families and caregivers.  As the leader of the Department, the Commissioner coordinates various programs, establishes departmental procedures and implements programs supported by federal, state and local legislation that accomplishes this objective. 

The ideal candidate possesses the necessary energy, skills and knowledge to be successful, including an:

  • Understanding of federal, state and local Aging programs, public management processes, program planning and performance measures;
  • Ability to interact with senior citizens, other private and public agency administrators and the general public; and
  • Ability to conduct effective meetings, establish and implement personnel policies, guidelines, rules, and regulations, supervise and evaluate office staff and to function within the framework of responsibility and authority established by state and municipal codes of conduct for public officers.

The ideal candidate will have graduated from an accredited college/university with a bachelor’s degree and possess five (5) years of experience in Aging services or a related social services field or the equivalent in work experience and graduate level study in social work or public policy/administration.  A minimum of two (2) years of administrative experience is preferred.  The successful applicant must be a resident of Albany County or agree to become one within one year of employment.  Minorities, women, persons with disabilities and Veterans are encouraged to apply.  An Equal Opportunity Employer.
