Orange County Executive Ed Diana Elected to Lead Association of County Executives, Seeks to Curb State's Mandate System
December 9, 2009
Orange County Executive Edward A. Diana was elected last week to serve as president of the New York State County Executives Association. At their annual organizational meeting in Albany on Friday, December 4, 2009, Diana was unanimously elected by his peers to lead the statewide organization. The executives set their legislative priorities for 2010 and then met with Governor Paterson.
“The current trajectory of spending at the state level in New York is unsustainable,” said Diana. “I’m working with County Executives from across the state to reign in local spending and to advocate for the same in Albany. Counties executives from across the state are committed to working for structural changes to the archaic state-mandate system that has resulted in New Yorkers paying the highest property taxes in the nation.”
County Executive Diana was first elected to the position of Orange County Executive in November of 2001. Diana is a strong advocate for counties role in strengthening public safety, ensuring fiscal responsibility, shoring up core infrastructure and improving economic development, and he reaffirms those priorities of the county executives association.
“As we continue to plough through these challenging fiscal times that we face here in New York, we are very pleased to have County Executive Diana’s energy and experience leading the efforts of the county executives association,” said Stephen J. Acquario, executive director of the New York State County Executives Association.
The New York State Association of Counties is a bipartisan municipal association serving all 62 counties of New York State including the City of New York. Organized in 1925, NYSAC’s mission is to represent, educate and advocate for member counties and the thousands of elected and appointed county officials who serve the public.
