A Statement by Stephen J. Acquario, Executive Director of the New York State Association of Counties, on behalf NY’s 62 Counties

May 6, 2009

The MTA (Metropolitan Transit Authority) bailout legislation being drafted today demonstrates yet again that the decisions made in the State Capitol have a direct and corresponding impact on local property taxes. The measure will impose increased payroll taxes on counties and local governments in the 12-county MTA region, which is home to 13.8 million of New York’s 18 million population. Despite recent steps to take responsibility for the fact that our homeowners and businesses pay more than 75 percent above the national average in property taxes, state leaders are drafting legislation that directly contradicts those efforts and puts the onus, once again, on New York's hardworking property taxpayers.

The New York State Association of Counties is a bipartisan municipal association serving all 62 counties of New York State including the City of New York. Organized in 1925, NYSAC’s mission is to represent, educate and advocate for member counties and the thousands of elected and appointed county officials who serve the public.
