Statement of NYSAC Executive Director Stephen J. Acquario on behalf of New York State's 57 Counties and the City of New York

July 10, 2009

Now that the Senate leadership has been resolved and the dozens of county revenue bills have been passed, county leaders can return to developing operating budgets with a greater sense of certainty.

New York State is in the midst of a major economic recession. Our communities are facing
high unemployment, high property taxes, job stagnation and a siginificant decrease in sales tax revenue.

In these difficult times, county leaders remain committed to facilitating an economic recovery focused on job creation and providing the programs and services that New Yorkers need and rely on. All levels of government, from local to state to federal, need to work together toward one purpose: the people of the State of New York.

The New York State Association of Counties is a bipartisan municipal association serving all 62 counties of New York State including the City of New York. Organized in 1925, NYSAC’s mission is to represent, educate and advocate for member counties and the thousands of elected and appointed county officials who serve the public.
