Last month, Governor Andrew Cuomo took office and delivered a State of the State address that was both sobering and hopeful.

The Fall harvest marks the end of a growing season and abundance of bountiful produce thanks to the thousands of farmers we have here in New York who work hard day-in and day-out to put food on our tables…and thiers. This edition of the NYSAC News is a shout out to agriculture’s contribution to our communities and New York State’s economy.

With the election just weeks away, this time of the year also brings thoughts of new beginnings. For counties, the start of new administration and a new Legislature brings the potential for the positive change we need in New York.

High property taxes are the most pressing issues facing our communities in New York. They repel new business ventures and they send New Yorkers packing for other states with lower taxes and better job opportunities.

Property taxes are not a new phenomenon. As one Cornell scholar points out in this magazine, property taxes were a thorn in the side of New York colonists over 300 years ago. Then they were used to take care of the poor and vagabonds. Today’s property taxes fund a much broader array of services, much of which are developed inside the four walls of the State Capitol.
