Statement from NYSAC on State Revenue Forecast

March 2, 2010

NYSAC President Tom Santulli, Chemung County Executive, said:

“Now with an $8 Billion deficit for the 2010-11 State Fiscal Year, it is clear that our state has reached a fiscal breaking point. The time for incremental change and temporarily papering over budget gaps with one-shots, temporary federal funds and unending tax increases has got to end. We need greater fiscal accountability and leadership in Albany, and we need it now.”

NYSAC Executive Director Stephen J. Acquario said:

“Our state is at a crossroads and the direction we take from this point forward will have real and meaningful consequences. With a declining revenue base projected until 2011, we need to carefully move forward with state spending with a clear understanding of this reduced revenue base. What caused the decline in revenues and what we are doing about it should be a top priority for state leaders. We must raise the awareness of this reality and implement a smart economic development strategy combined with fiscal restraint in our pending state budget. We must use this fiscal challenge to re-emerge from this recession as a stronger more efficient state.”

The New York State Association of Counties is a bipartisan municipal association serving all 62 counties of New York State including the City of New York. Organized in 1925, NYSAC’s mission is to represent, educate and advocate for member counties and the thousands of elected and appointed county officials who serve the public.
