UPDATED NYSAC Statement on Senate Passage of Indigent Legal Service Reforms

A Statement by NYSAC President William E. Cherry on the Passage of Indigent Legal Services Reform Legislation
"State lawmakers today demonstrated their continued commitment to protecting local taxpayers. Specifically, the New York State Senate passed legislation that improves legal services for the poor in counties across the state, and institutes a multi-year plan for the state to assume the local costs of this program.

We applaud the steadfast leadership of Senate Deputy Majority Leader John DeFrancisco (R-Onondaga County), who worked tirelessly to ensure that justice prevailed in New York State. This bill accomplishes three objectives. It provides meaningful fiscal relief for counties and their property taxpayers. It protects taxpayers from costly and unnecessary lawsuits against New York's public defense program. And it improves legal defense services for the poor in all counties in the state."
