Statemement: Medicaid and Minimum Wage Now Shifted to County Taxpayers in the State Budget

A Statement by NYSAC President William E. Cherry on the State Budget Proposal to make local taxpayers fund Medicaid growth and increases in minimum wage
"The connection between the new proposal for $250 million in Medicaid efficiencies to be undertaken by NYC and the counties tied to the enactment of minimum wage is bad public policy. The state's reliance on the local tax base has proven to be a loser for the local taxpayer for decades with the end result being the highest local taxes in the nation. County leaders strongly oppose this proposal advanced by the Governor and urge the Legislature to reject it in its entirety. Acting in haste to secure an "on time budget" at the expense of local taxpayers is a disservice to the people of New York and will have long term negative consequences."
