Indigent Defense

NYSAC supports legislation designed to improve the public defense system and provide a multi-year state takeover of county public defense costs. The bipartisan legislation (S.8114/A.10706) would ensure that all New Yorkers, regardless of income, have access to an attorney from their first court appearance to their last, and would provide mandate relief to counties. This represents the most important mandate relief bill of 2016.

The bill was sent to the Governor's desk on December 20, and counties must encourage the Governor to sign the bill into law.

We urge all NYS counties to take these steps to voice their support of this bill:
Step 1:  Write a letter to the Governor's Counsel encouraging Governor Cuomo to sign the bill into law (click here to view a sample letter).

Step 2: Send the letter (via hardcopy or email) to:
Alphonso David, Esq, Counsel to the Governor
Executive Chamber
State Capitol
Albany, NY 12224
legislative.secretary@exec.ny.gov

Step 3: Let NYSAC know that you sent a letter of support (mlavigne@nysac.org) and encourage fellow county leaders to do the same.
