NYSAC Executive Director Stephen Acquario Honored for Completing High Performance Leadership Academy

Curriculum developed by Fortune 1000 Execs, Gen. Colin Powell and other thought leaders.

The Executive Director of the New York State Association of Counties—Stephen J. Acquario—was honored today for successfully completing the High Performance Leadership Academy, a partnership of the National Association of Counties (NACo).

The High Performance Leadership Academy features a robust curriculum developed by the Professional Development Academy in partnership with Fortune 1000 executives, public sector leaders and world-renowned thought leaders, including General Colin Powell and Dr. Marshall Goldsmith.

“The Leadership Academy provided a unique and challenging professional development experience that will help NYSAC continue to serve our members and accomplish the goals we set on their behalf,” said Mr. Acquario, who has been NYSAC's Executive Director for the past 16 years. “The mix of real-time instruction, readings, webinars, and working with a cohort of colleagues from across the country gave me the chance to learn from distinguished experts alongside county professionals who are facing similar challenges and opportunities.”

NYSAC represents all of New York's 57 counties and the City of New York with its five boroughs. The bi-partisan municipal association was created in 1925 and its mission is to educate, represent, advocate for, and serve its member counties and the elected and appointed officials who serve their residents.

“On behalf of the board of directors and all of our members, we congratulate Stephen Acquario for this recognition, and we appreciate his tireless commitment to fostering an association that provides critical information, training and leadership to county officials across the state,” said NYSAC President Jack Marren, the chairman of the Ontario County Board of Supervisors.

The High Performance Leadership Academy focuses on five essential skills: leading, organizing, collaborating, communicating and delivering. It emphasizes real-time instruction, small-group learning and knowledge exchanges.

More than 2,489 professionals from more than 1,343 counties across the country completed the Leadership Academy since 2018.

“NACo's High Performance Leadership Academy is a groundbreaking program designed to help county professionals achieve their full potential in service to residents,” said NACo Executive Director Matthew Chase. “We've had the privilege of working closely with Stephen Acquario and his staff over the years and are confident that the leadership skills honed in this course will make an already outstanding organization even better.”
