NYSAC and NYSACHO presented Senator Hannon with the County Leadership Award.

“This award symbolizes government achievement, specifically county government achievement, and is presented to persons providing exemplary leadership toward the betterment of county government,” said NYSAC Executive Director Stephen J. Acquario. “Senator Hannon has long championed local health departments, from defending Article VI funding to promoting public health initiatives and backing legislation to support local efforts to combat the opioid epidemic.”
Senator Hannon, who represents the 6th Senate District, which covers central Nassau County, was recognized for his longstanding legislative leadership on public health issues of primary concern for counties across the state.
“Senator Hannon has been a steadfast advocate for the needs of public health departments, ensuring that they are funded and supported. Funding for public health programs ensures that counties can continue to mitigate threats to their communities and protect their citizens, and we are grateful to Senator Hannon for his partnership,” said Sarah Ravenhall, Executive Director of the NYS Association of County Health Officials (NYSACHO).
Professionals working within the 58 New York State local health departments serve on the front line, promoting health and protecting communities at the local level. Core public health services provided by local health departments include environmental health services, prevention of communicable disease, community health assessment, family health, emergency preparedness, and chronic disease prevention. As new threats to public health emerge, local health departments are the first responders.
Senator Hannon said, “it has been an honor to promote public health across New York State, a unique state with diverse regions and diverse needs. I'm grateful for NYSAC and NYSACHO for their partnership and for this recognition. We will continue to advocate for the local health departments working to keep our communities healthy.”
