Counties Announce NY Counties Lead Campaign to Highlight Contributions of Counties During COVID-19 Pandemic

The campaign is focused on telling stories from the front lines of the war against COVID-19.

Today, during a digital press conference, the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) announced a new public awareness campaign called NY Counties Lead that is focused on telling stories from the front lines of the war against COVID-19.

At the digital press conference, NYSAC Executive Director Stephen Acquario shared stories from the field and cited specific example of innovations, courage, and community that are playing out in counties across the state. Watch a recording of the event here.

“County leaders are the onsite incident commanders, serving as the generals on the ground. They are developing innovative ways to stop the spread of the virus, modeling courage at the local level, and are focused on strengthening their communities during this global pandemic,” said NYSAC Executive Director Stephen J. Acquario. “The NY Counties Lead campaign will share the stories of innovation, courage and community that exemplify the work of our county leaders and heroic frontline workers they oversee.”

NY Counties Lead will detail some of the ways that counties are working to stop the spread of the virus, address the challenges of social distancing, and/or deal with the social and economic impact that the global pandemic is having on their own communities. Some topics we'll be highlighting include:

  • Enacting emergency orders and social distancing guidance
  • Facilitating testing and securing supplies
  • Upholding public safety and enforcing social distancing
  • Providing mental health and social services
  • Managing the economic impact

“The NY Counties Lead campaign was created as part of the 2020 National County Government Month. The theme for this year's county government month is Counties Matter, an apt choice that has been proven time and time again during this pandemic, as counties in New York State are leading the local response efforts to this worldwide pandemic,” said NYSAC President John F. Marren.
