DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Performs professional nursing services in accordance with professional practices, special orders from physicians and established rules and regulations. General assignments are received from the Public Health Director or a School Physician. Orders concerning patient care are usually given directly by a physician. Registered professional nurses are expected to perform routine duties without detailed instructions. Supervision may be exercised over licensed practical nurses and other employees. Does related work as required. NOTE: In compliance with OSHA, this position has a potential risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens (blood/body fluids).

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative Only) Prepares and applies dressings, gives medication and nursing treatment as prescribed by physicians; Responsible for observing symptoms and carrying out diagnostic procedure ordered by the physician; Carries out therapeutic treatments as ordered by the physician, including the giving of medications; Takes vital signs and changes bandages and dressings; Instructs patient or members of patient’s family in regard to patient’s diet, health habit, the carrying out of treatment at home, and rehabilitative measures as authorized by the physician; Makes contact with appropriate welfare or health agencies as necessary to assure the patient needed service, follow-up care and/or safety; Performs related services for patients in the prevention of illness and the attainment of maximum health; Assists in physical, visual and auditory screening examinations; May administer first aid and emergency treatment; Prepares and maintains health records; Assists at immunization clinics; Prepares records and reports as required or indicated including suspected abuse or neglect; Utilizes proper body mechanics consistently for safety and development through: (a) active participation in nursing organizations; (b) participation in in-service programs; (c) attending staff meetings; (d) reading appropriate references, periodical journals and on-line offerings; Prepares, implements and evaluates treatment plan; Participates in case conferences, joint visits; Understands human relationships, cultural influences and spiritual needs of patients and families; Recognizes the impact of social and economic issues on patients and families; Participates in the development/revision of policies, procedures and processes.

WHEN WORKING FOR A PUBLIC SCHOOL MAY ALSO: Inspect the school plant, playground and cafeteria and report on general safety and sanitary conditions; Order, inventory and oversee the storage of first aid and related health supplies and equipment; Consult with attendance teachers and staff members concerning a variety of health factors related to non-attendance and communicable diseases.

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES and PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of nursing principles and techniques and their relation to medical and surgical practices; good knowledge of materia medica, sanitation, personal hygiene, and dietetics; working knowledge and ability to use computers and other technological equipment; skill in the application of nursing techniques and practices; ability to carry out successfully the therapeutic measures prescribed; ability to follow technical, oral and written instruction; ability to keep records and make reports; ability to work independently, using professional judgment, and with minimal supervision; ability to get along well with patients, physicians and others; good observation; mental alertness; firmness; cheerfulness; patience; emotional stability; sympathetic attitude toward the sick.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from a New York State registered or regionally accredited school of nursing and Possession of a current New York State license to practice as a registered professional nurse For County Only: Must also possess two (2) years of general nursing experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: This class requires extensive travel. Incumbents will be required to possess a valid, appropriate level, New York State operator’s license, or otherwise demonstrate the ability to meet the travel needs of the job. NOTE: Part-time employment can be pro-rated to count towards full-time (based on number of hours worked per week)
