Statement From NYSAC Executive Director Stephen Acquario On Court Ruling Increasing Compensation For Indigent Legal Defense Attorneys

This week a decision was handed down by the Supreme Court of New York County doubling the hourly rates for attorneys who provide legal representation to the poor.

Taxpayer funded programs and services are to be provided through the legislative state budget process, giving all affected parties an opportunity to come together and shape public policy.

We urge the Governor and Legislature to address this as part of their responsibilities of office. The state of New York has a moral, legal and constitutional obligation to provide for the adequate representation of the poor.
