Clerk of the Board of Legislature, Allegany County
About the vacancy: Allegany County is seeking candidates for Clerk of the Board of Legislature. The Clerk of the Board plays a vital role in supporting transparent and accessible local government. The position is one of the most complex and responsible positions in the county organization. Its primary goal is to keep a record of all acts and proceedings of the Board and be the custodian of all records, vouchers, and other papers required or authorized by law to be deposited in their office. On a day-to-day basis, the Clerk assists the County Legislative body in organizing and conducting its meetings and business by acting as the right hand to the Board Chair, and the chief assistant to committee chairs.
Key responsibilities include preparing and publishing public meeting agendas, notices, and minutes; recording official Board actions; assisting with drafting and circulating official Board correspondence; administering oaths of office; and maintaining custody of all policies of insurance of all types carried on the corporate property of the county. The position supervises a small staff of others to assist in these duties and such other duties as may be assigned by the Board.
Preferred Qualifications: This role requires a high level of professionalism, sound judgment, and technical expertise. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in supporting elected bodies, with experience working in a County, City, or other Municipal Clerk of the Board’s Office or similar public agency setting.

Special Requirement: Public Officers Law, § 3: This position is considered to be a public officer, and the incumbent must be a United States citizen and a resident of Allegany County. Residency is waived for recruitment but is required by law to be obtained prior to appointment to the Office.
