County Buildings to Glow Green This Veterans Day in Honor of Those Who Served

County buildings, courthouses, and municipal landmarks across New York will illuminate in green this Veterans Day as part of the 5th annual Operation Green Light campaign — a statewide initiative that began in New York and has since become a national movement.

Launched by the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC) in 2021, Operation Green Light was adopted by the National Association of Counties (NACo) in 2022, expanding the effort to counties across the nation. The campaign invites local governments, businesses, and residents to shine a green light, November 4 through 11, in visible tribute to the service and sacrifice of our nation’s veterans, and to raise awareness of the vital services counties provide to veterans and their families.

Operation Green Light 2025

“Operation Green Light gives government leaders, businesses, and individuals a way to reach out and let members of the veteran community know that we’re with them and that we appreciate all that they’ve done to protect our country and our way of life,” said Phil Church, NYSAC President and Oswego County Administrator. “Counties were proud to start this initiative here in New York, and we’re equally proud to see it grow into a national expression of gratitude for those who served.”

“Not only does the campaign create a symbol of support for our veterans, but it’s also an opportunity to shine a light on the vital work of our local Veteran Service Offices, which work every day to ensure veterans receive the benefits they’ve earned and get connected with programs and services that address their unique needs,” said Stephen J. Acquario, Executive Director of NYSAC. “As we mark the fifth year of this campaign, I want to thank every county, business and resident who helps light New York green, and most importantly, I want to thank our veterans for their service and sacrifice. Their courage continues to inspire us, and Operation Green Light is one small way we show that appreciation.”

Operation Green Light is more than a gesture, it’s an opportunity to highlight the essential role counties play in supporting veterans, from connecting residents to VA benefits, to providing peer-support programs, transportation to medical care, tax exemptions, and more.

Founded in 1925, the New York State Association of Counties represents, educates, and advocates for all 62 counties of New York State (including the City of New York). NYSAC’s mission is to foster excellence in county government and amplify the collective voice of county leaders at the state and federal levels.
