About NYSAC
The New York State Association of Counties is a non-partisan organization representing New York's county governments and their elected and appointed officials. We advocate at the state and federal levels to ensure that local governments have the resources, tools, and policies they need to best serve their communities.
Position Summary
NYSAC is seeking a highly motivated Legislative Coordinator to join our dynamic legislative team. The Coordinator will support NYSAC’s advocacy efforts by tracking legislation and policy developments at the state and local levels that affect county governments. This role is ideal for a policy-minded individual with a solid understanding of New York State and local government systems, particularly the legislative process.
The Legislative Coordinator will collaborate closely with other members of the legislative team and will be responsible for researching, analyzing, and monitoring a portfolio of issues relevant to counties. This individual will help advance NYSAC's policy agenda by building relationships, supporting legislative strategies, and assisting with member communications and outreach.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor and analyze legislation and policy proposals at the state and local levels that impact county governments.
- Track legislative developments and maintain detailed records and updates on bill status and policy initiatives.
- Assist with the preparation of policy memos, advocacy materials, legislative updates, and issue briefs for internal use and distribution to NYSAC members.
- Attend legislative hearings, briefings, and meetings; summarize relevant content for the legislative team and membership.
- Coordinate with county leaders and member counties on legislative concerns and priorities.
- Help organize legislative advocacy events, including NYSAC’s Legislative Conference and lobby days.
- Organize webinars, workshops, and podcasts to educate county officials on legislative developments and emerging issues.
- Collaborate with the legislative team to identify emerging issues and develop strategies for response or advocacy.
- Cultivate and maintain relationships with a wide range of stakeholders to inform and advance NYSAC’s legislative priorities.
- Support communication efforts by contributing to newsletters, blogs, reports, and social media as needed.
- Some travel required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Political Science, Public Policy, Government Affairs, or a related field.
- 2+ years of experience in a legislative, governmental, or policy-oriented role; experience in New York State government or local government preferred.
- Strong knowledge of the New York State legislative process and familiarity with state and local government structures.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to synthesize complex legislative issues for a variety of audiences.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment.
- Commitment to public service and the mission of supporting county governments across New York State.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with or for a county, state agency, or legislative office in New York.
- Knowledge of policy areas relevant to county government.
- Familiarity with legislative tracking tools and systems (e.g., StateWatch and LRS).
- Public speaking or advocacy experience.
- Skilled in engaging diverse stakeholders, building consensus, and navigating politically sensitive environments.
